WX News: President's Message

Welcome back to WX in the fall of 2009! The season got off to a strong start with our opening event at Shelburne Hotel's rooftop garden. The weather held up and the turnout was great as our members had the chance to reconnect after the summer.

Those of you lucky enough to join us at our 2nd annual Golf & Tennis (and spa) outing, had the opportunity to exercise and relax with WX friends in early August. Please be sure to see the pictures on the website of the day. The day was stress free but unfortunately, not rain free, as members engaged in a tennis clinic, a round of golf and assorted pampering. Thanks again to Susan Swanezy for arranging the day and the cocktail party.

Our goal this year is to engage as many of the members as possible in a variety of events. We have an upcoming tour of The High Line which is conducted by one of the two co-founders. Many of you will remember when we heard about this project as it was being planned in early 2006 and now we have the chance to experience the space. I like to think of this as our "before" and "after" event.

Other upcoming events include Conversations on October 14th, where a panel of our past Presidents will address young, female real estate professionals and offer their own personal wisdom. I think the panelists this year will have encouraging words for these women. We also have a breakfast scheduled for November 4th with Bill Rudin, President of Rudin Management. In addition, we have a fabulous program planned for December which will include a panel of female real estate journalists, moderated by one of our own WX members. Please stay tuned in for more specific details.

The Annual Dinner is our main event of the fall and this year, we are pleased to honor Meredith Kane, real estate partner at Paul,Weiss , Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. Meredith has a vast clientele which includes developers, equity investors, institutional and entrepreneurial owners, and government agencies. Her involvement in so many prominent New York City deals is tremendous and she has also served as a commissioner of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission from 1995-2004. Meredith brings her delightful and sparkling personality, plus great laughter, to everything she does and I look forward to her remarks at the dinner. Please sponsor a table, purchase an ad, or buy an individual ticket to support WX. This is our only fund raising opportunity for the year and we rely upon our dinner to not only support our own events but to provide all the scholarship money for our scholarship program. I encourage you to come and bring your real estate colleagues. Please contact our committee chairs if you have any questions: Joanne Podell at Joanne_podell@cushwake.com or Anne Locke at alocke@akrf.com.

The past two years have been ones of growth for our WX membership. It is my goal to continue our expansion with the addition of worthy candidates. Please make an effort to nominate one or two people you believe would enhance our membership and who would benefit from what we offer. Even if these are not candidates you know well, I am sure there are others within WX who may know them and would agree that these women are great additions to the WX community. From this growth, we can all expand our horizons. I look forward to making WX an even more vibrant organization this year. Our committee chairs are Cheryl Boyer at cboyer@lodgingadvisors.com and Patty Connolly at Patricia.Connolly@rreef.com.

Please become active on our committees and feel free to send me any ideas or suggestions you have. The door is always open.

Sincerely,

Peggy
